Kangaroo Island lies off the mainland in South Australia. In January 2020 the island experienced catastrophic bush fires. The first unit in the series of 3 titles will take students back to the island as it was before the bush fires. It will show why this island is a major attraction for tourists and indicate the place of tourism for local employment and the Island’s economy. This provides the foundation for the following units on the bush fires (cause and extent) and the impact/recovery final title. Take your students to the island. Follow the maps. Look at the photographs. Understand the predictions of increasing tourism for 2020. Then follow this foundation on to the fire events of January 2020 to understand the impact of the fires which have been titled “disastrous”. The impact has been severe and the recovery will take several years.
