1-Hour Lesson – Fully Interactive – Ready to Teach

Dear Colleague,

Imagine African Americans leaving the South in search of freedom, opportunity, and a new life on the open plains. This lesson focuses on the Exoduster movement of 1879 and its impact on the American West.

This lesson is the eleventh in a unit on the American West. It explores the reasons for migration, its effects, and its significance. Students consolidate their knowledge of black migration and apply it to exam-style questions through interactive tasks.

All lessons in this series follow a consistent structure, supporting coherent learning and helping students track their progress:

LO 1: To understand the reasons for black migration after 1879
LO 2: To evaluate the impact of this migration
LO 3: To explain the importance of the migration

Learning Features:
Fully assessed tasks with opportunities for feedback
Extension activity for higher-achieving students
Resources provided at the end of the PowerPoint

This is a straightforward, knowledge-rich lesson that can run for 1 hour.

I have also created Lesson 12 on the Ranchers, and full units covering Plains Indians, Settlers, Development of the Plains, Law and Order, and Law and Crime (24 lessons, 100 hours of planning).
