Thank you for looking at my resource.
This lesson is fully editable. This resource includes a fully comprehensive powerpoint ,worksheets/resources catering to a wide range of abilities and resources list to support with preparation.
Children will start by looking at simple sentences and consolidating understanding that a sentence must contain a noun and a verb. This will be achieved through partner discussions, deciding which of three sentences is correct.
Children will move on to looking at the problem with simple sentences. For instance children will be unable to identify which picture a particular sentence belongs to and through this will learn the importance of expanding sentences . Research has shown that when children learn through problem solving children develop a deeper and longer lasting understanding of their learning.
The children will then look at a number of sentences and identify how they have been expanded. Children will look at a number of child friendly crimes (fairy tale type story lines) and will use the police reports to write expanded sentences.
Children will start by completing this as a class and then move onto completing their first independent task.
Once children have completed this task they will then regroup as a class. Building on the first independent task children will now be creating their own ideas about how to expand a sentence. After looking at a teacher modelled example and completing a partner task children will expand their own sentence.
A helping hands task (supported task) is provided.
A chilli challenge is provided to extend learning. This should be given to all children. The ‘differentiation’ will be based on how children access the task.
Past/current vocabulary is explicitly taught, and children are reminded of this at suitable and regular opportunities.
Stem sentences are provided throughout to promote oracy.
