Year 2 Weight and Capacity

This chapter covers three related skills: reading a weighing scale that goes up in steps rather than ones, reading a measuring jug in millilitres and litres, and reading a thermometer in degrees, including temperatures below freezing. Grams versus kilograms and millilitres versus litres are taught through everyday comparisons (an apple versus a cat, a teaspoon versus a bottle of water), and pupils are shown how to work out the value of each mark on a scale before reading it, rather than assuming every mark is worth one.

Includes a worked explanation, common misconceptions addressed directly (assuming a taller or wider container always holds more, mixing grams and kilograms in one sum, leaving the degree symbol off a temperature), and 30 questions across three sections: warm up, getting stronger and challenge, moving from straightforward reading to worded reasoning problems.

Answers included, with a star chart for pupils to track progress and a confidence check-in at the end.
