I have been teaching history since 2002 and I have been head of History at a school for 10 years which sees many of my students opt for GCSE, A level and beyond. I am passionate about History being taught well, and believe that this largely stems from good resources (as well of course effective delivery). My lessons and various teaching resources are therefore produced with the intention of inspiring students to think for themselves, to be challenged yet engaged.

AS AQA History - How to analyse Primary sources

(0)
Primary Source Analysis Flow Chart specifically for the AQA AS History specification but can be used for all primary source evaluations. An easy to use flow chart for AS students to help them meet the demands of the new Primary Source question for the AS AQA exam. The document helps weaker students formulate an answer helping them to structure their ideas, whilst offering some guidance and a checklist for more able students. It is complicated but it does work! The AQA exam question ask them to analyse the value of the source in relation to a specific question and then to make a comparison with another source about which offers the most value – in relation to the question. As part of this analysis, students are expected to comment on the provenance and tone (where relevant) as well as the context and argument of the period studied. For a top mark answer students need to be able to balance provenance, tone and context on their analysis of each source to provide a meaningful and substantiated judgement! It is tricky but this document helps students of all abilities meet the requirements being asked of them.

AQA AS American Dream Analysing a Primary source exam question

(0)
Contains a ppt which breaks down analysing Primary sources and the exam questions and an accompanying worksheet. The combination allows students to try and work through their own responses whilst supporting them if they are struggling. It is based on the extent of affluence in the USA by the early 1960s, so needs to be used towards the end of the yr 12 or first year of A2, where students will have obtained enough contextual knowledge to be able to answer the question comprehensively. As this source question is based at the end of part 1 I have NOT included the the "How to analyse Primary sources flow-chart" which I make reference to at the end of the ppt- it is hoped that students have already had some experience of constructing answers at this stage. However, the document can also be purchased if guidance is still required.

AS AQA American Dream revision plan

A break down for the AS AQA American Dream unit, using specification criteria and supported with key issues and events for greater context. Students can make a note where they feel their understanding of certain topics is, by dating under the red, yellow or green face. The idea behind this is so that students can see specific areas where they need to focus their revision; hopefully moving their learning all to the green smiley face by the time of the exam. This was an extremely useful resource for my students last year as they and I, were able to monitor their progress. I'm currently in the process of writing the new one for A2.

A2 How to answer Primary sources flow chart

(0)
Hot the heels of my AS flow chart I have created a version for my A2 students and thought you would appreciate it. It is in line with the AQA requirements but with a little bit of tweaking it would be useful for any of the exam boards requirments for primary source analysis. Whilst not a restrictive formula, it does offer guidance for weaker students to follow an order to allow them to cover all aspects on the AQA mark scheme. It also works as a check list for the more able. This is subtly different from the AS version as there is no need for a judgment at AS, however the exam board does state that sources can be used and linked together where deemed appropriate and relevant.

War and Society in Medieval Britain - Revision task sheets C AD790-1500 GCSE OCR History A

(0)
This is a series of tasks serving as an overview for the War and Society unit for the OCR Modern world A unit - Medieval to 1500, designed to help with the massive amount of content required for this course. These revision sheets cover the threat of the Vikings and Saxon’s responses, the Norman conquest and it’s impact, the break down of the Feudal system, the Anarchy and King John and the Barons, the Age of Chivalry, and the Hundred years’ war. The intention being to give a decent overview from which to start effective revision. Students can always use their class notes to add extra details to these tasks. Some of the tasks included involve completing charts, categorising and adding evidence. The sheets are broken down into the time period, type of warfare, attitude and responses and the impact on the British people. There are extra aspects to some - such as why was the Norman Conquest successful as this is covered in the exam spec. There are also some opportunities for students to answer an 8 and a 14 mark questions.

OCR History A Personal Rule to restoration _ What type of King was Charles I

This is a couple of lessons work introducing students to Charles I and his beliefs. The lesson covers Charles’s attitude but also the growing power of parliament. There is a variety of tasks from a quiz, highlighting sources, fill in the gaps, to gathering evidence from around the room or on a table if you’d prefer. All the resources are on the ppt to be printed off. This works as a brilliant introduction into the Personal rule of Charles I and was a success with my Year 11 who were dreading this aspect of the course. The lesson will need the use of the OCR War and Society Text book.

Was the policy of appeasement a mistake - interpretations work in prep for GCSE

(0)
This is worksheet for a lesson in Year 9 in preparation for getting students to understand the various historiography for appeasement at GCSE. This simplistically encourages students to identify the arguments for and against the policy. Student are then encouraged to complete an opinion poll and make a decision over how they would have felt about Hitler and the policy of appeasement in 1938 and then again for 1939. Students should be able to see how the circumstances surrounding Hitler’s actions changed people’s views and opinions.

NEW Revision Game War and Society OCR Modern World A spec.

(0)
A very simple revision game that can be done in pairs, small groups or as a whole class in teams. Students are to roll the dice twice to come up with their coordinates for their clue on the board. They are then to respond to the clue. If they do this successfully they win the points on the dice. If they are able to give examples and discuss for 30 seconds their scores can be doubled. I often do this kind of activity as a class with them in teams. If a team can not answer, then they must hunt out the examples before they can rejoin! A fun way to bring in and cover lots of content as part of the revision process.

A revision game to encourage students to explain the various key terms and events during 1945-1975 USA: Land of Liberty unit for the OCR Modern World A GCSE curriculum. This will also work along side any exam board for basic content as it more about getting students to recall information about certain topics to win points. This could be adapted as a whole class game / small group game and if students are unable to explain their answers, their task could be to go away and find out so that they can then come and join back in once they have gained the knowledge.

OCR A _ Personal Rule _ Events leading to the Civil War.

A lesson designed for the Personal rule to Restoration unit which starts with a recap of why Englishmen were falling out with Charles I. It recaps the role of the three advisors - Weston, Laud and Wentworth. The lesson then develops in to the Long Parliament with a short task where students are asked to find a list of concessions which Charles I made. There is then a task for students to find out the short term causes of the English Civil War. Including the Irish rebellion, the Grand Remonstrance, The attempted arrest of 5 members, the Militia Ordinance, the commissions of Array and the Nineteen propositions. The War and Society text book will be required for this lesson.

Interwar years to Origins of WW2 and appeasement interpretations. Revision cards OCR Modern World A

(0)
As the new GCSE is largely content driven, the objective of these flash cards are for students to try to help learn, revise, test and hopefully retain some knowledge of the early part of the course. The cards ask some basic comprehension questions - with some more complicated style qs that give a good overview of the Paris Peace conference and treaties, the LON successes and failures and the causes of WW2 with Hitler's actions. The cards are to be backed - the numbers on each question card correlate to the number on the answer card. The cards can be emailed out to students for them to print and revise at home, or can be printed off and cut up as part of a revision activity in lessons. There will be more to follow as I develop them.

OCR A Personal Rule - The Grand Remonstrance source work activity

(0)
This is just a brief task encouraging students to read the sources about the Remonstrance and answer questions on the back. The questions encourage students to use the evidence from the sources. The content covers the divisions that were emerging within Parliament about the Remonstrance and is a super start in allowing students to understand the complexities of the English Civil War and that it was not quite as simple as Parliament vs the King.
