This task card set is ideal for reviewing and practicing specific reading comprehension skills. Included are 20 reading task cards that focus primarily on THEME and AUTHOR’S PURPOSE. These task cards vary in reading levels and difficulty and can be used in 3rd–6th grades. Both fiction and nonfiction texts are included. Each card contains a short passage, a mix of multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, and/or graphic organizers to fill in. Task cards are half a page and should be printed double-sided, with the passage on one side and the tasks (questions) on the back. Student response sheets are included if you don’t want students to write on the actual task cards. This print and go resource is the perfect addition to a novel study on, Zane and the Hurricane, by Rodman Philbrick. This resource includes student handouts for 4 different themes from the novel. Each handout includes a brief description of the theme and explains how the theme connects to the novel. Questions are also included to help guide students in analyzing their theme. Students will answer theme-related questions using themes present in the novel, Zane and the Hurricane. This is a great activity to split the class into groups and have each group work on a different theme. Some themes are more difficult, be sure to preview the questions to differentiate for your students. This Theme Study resource focuses on the following 4 themes: Family Survival Hope Inequality & Injustices There are several ways to implement this theme study. For example, students can work in groups and each group is assigned a different theme to analyze. Or, the teacher can assign students different themes to analyze independently. Then, have students group up with others who focused on the same theme (think jigsaw puzzle). The Zane and the Hurricane Theme Study provides you the flexibility to allow students to work individually, with a partner, or in a group. You can divide up the cards or make multiple sets depending on how many task cards you want on each ring. Keep the task cards loose and pass out the cards to students, pairs, or groups. You can differentiate the questions the students receive based on their levels. Give students choices on which task cards they will complete. For example, pick 50 out of the 76 cards to complete by the end of the novel or have students complete the even or odd numbered cards.
