This resource shows themes in classic Fantasy movies and stories. It speaks about three very common tropes in the genre, that being: Courage, Loyalty among friends and Survival skills. My classes loved the movie and the Presentations on the genre itself, I found this to be very useful in refreshing their memories of characters and what Fantasy writing/movies entail.

Shape Camouflage!

Purpose: This activity can be used for Kindgergarten and Primary school level students. Suggestion: The resource can be used as an art lesson or as a fun filler activity based on shapes and colouring. The object is to find the hidden shapes in the larger drawing. Each organic shape has been drawn by hand and has small and large patterns to help with coordination and the ability to discern shapes. Each pattern also has intricate designs that children can colour and decorate as an extension activity. In the past I ask students to coordinate colours with shapes and this has been really helpful in teaching new vocabulary. I also have used this in the unit: Camouflage as an introductory activity.

This engaging resource can be used either with the film or the novel by Kathryn Stockett. The questions are focused on helping illicit ideas and prepare students for the actual watching/reading portion of their study. Like most of my other resources there is material for discussion and debate or even just individual critical thinking. The resource addresses: slavery,Jim Crow, segregation, civil rights, women’s rights and the wealth gap. There are also some key dates that teachers can build knowledge on as background information and context. Students can explore the time period of the 60s and the pros and cons of living in that time period. Teachers can also use the tasks to discuss Jim Crow and the impact the laws had on community as a whole.
