What qualifications do I need to be a teacher?

To be a teacher in the UK, you’ll generally need the following qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree (for secondary teaching this should be related to the subject you wish to teach) 

  • QTS or another recognised teaching qualification in Scotland and Northern Ireland 

  • GCSEs or equivalent in English and Maths at 4/C or above 

  • GCSE or equivalent in Science at 4/C or above if teaching primary 

  • Registration with your country’s teaching council 

However, requirements will vary depending on where you are in the UK – Scotland and Northern Ireland have different requirements to England and Wales.

How to become a teacher in England and Wales

To become a teacher in England and Wales, you generally need: 

  • A degree 

  • Qualified teacher status (QTS) 

  • GCSEs in English and Maths at grade 4 (C) or above 

  • For primary schools, you’ll also need a GCSE (grade 4/C or above) in science

How to become a teacher in Scotland

You’ll need at least the following qualifications to become a teacher in Scotland: 

  • A bachelor’s degree  

  • A qualification in Initial Teacher Education (ITE) or a Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) 

  • Mandatory registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) 

  • SCQF Level 6 in English and SCQF Level 5 in Maths 

  • A background check through the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme

How to become a teacher in Northern Ireland

You’ll need at least the following qualifications to become a teacher in Northern Ireland: 

  • An undergraduate degree 

  • A recognised teacher training qualification from a full-time, four-year undergraduate Bachelor of Education (BEd) or a one-year postgraduate qualification such as the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) 

  • Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) 

  • GCSEs in English and Maths at grade 4 (C) or above 

  • For primary schools, you’ll also need a GCSE (grade 4/C or above) in science

Your routes into teaching
