All of the words included in this resource are from the DfES ‘Letters and Sounds’ Appendix 1.

Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as students needing additional learning support.

What’s it for?
This 200 High-Frequency Word Activity set helps young learners improve sight recognition and provides opportunities to sound out words. Learners can use it for independent matching or as a group game (for up to nine players). Activity and game instructions are included (see page 11 of the Word Boards).

Games
Learners match and cover the twelve words on their board with a word card. The next 200 high-frequency words are distributed across seventeen coloured boards. A colour-coded, numbered reference sheet is included to organise and clarify the word order.

How to use this resource?

This sheet has been included as a quick, easy reference to making clear which of the 200 words are included on which colour board.

High Frequency Word Cards

• Pages 1 - 12

Print sheets onto card and separate the words on each page following dotted lines. Shuffle word cards and place on a table top for learners to match.

Blank Word Cards (Included)

Some of page 12 includes ‘blank’ word cards for your own words to be written on to make the vocabulary individualised to learners’ needs or to fit a theme/topic.

High Frequency Word Match Boards

• Pages 1 - 9 and pages 12 - 19

Each learner has a different coloured board with x12 words to match. Learners can work alone or in groups; the first to match all their words wins. Alternatively, you can play word Bingo using ‘counters’ instead of word cards (see pages 20–21). Instructions for this game are on page 11.

Blank Word Board (Included)

A blank word board is included for your own words to be written on to make the vocabulary individualised to learners’ needs or to fit a theme/topic. This can be used with the blank word cards (also included).
