These lessons are part of a bundle
I created this Scheme of Learning to support ECTs and newly qualified teacher in my department :)
This Stave 2 lesson bundle for A Christmas Carol includes 4–5 fully planned GCSE English Literature lessons designed for Key Stage 4 students. The lessons explore Scrooge’s past, the power of memory, and the early stages of his moral transformation, while developing secure exam-style analysis skills.
Through a carefully sequenced set of activities, students analyse how Dickens uses the Ghost of Christmas Past, childhood experiences, and relationships to reveal the origins of Scrooge’s isolation and greed. The bundle supports the development of AO1, AO2, and AO3 skills, with clear links to Victorian social context and Dickens’ moral purpose.
This bundle includes:
- 4–5 complete 60-minute lessons focused on Stave 2
- Clear learning objectives, outcomes, and success criteria
- Analysis of the Ghost of Christmas Past and the symbolism of light and memory
- Exploration of Scrooge’s lonely childhood and emotional neglect
- In-depth study of Fezziwig as a moral contrast
- Examination of Belle and the conflict between love and wealth
- Key themes: regret, memory, responsibility, and the beginnings of redemption
- Embedded AO3 context (Victorian childhood, work, and attitudes to wealth)
- Cloze activities, Frayer models, quote explosions, and retrieval starters
- Sentence starters and model paragraphs (Grades 6–9)
- Practice GCSE-style exam questions
- Challenge and extension tasks for higher-attaining students
