A well planned and fully resourced unit of work on the book “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”. My class (which was made up of a lots of reluctant readers) absolutely loved this unit! Hooked was an understatement!
This unit of work is ideal for a 4 week unit on fantasy writing (22 lessons in total). It includes all planning, resources and slides needed for the 22 lessons.
This unit covers the following:
1 - understand features found in fantasy narratives
a. gallery lesson (music / pictures / text ) & children to make inferences
b. Comprehension Q’s - retrieval
c. personal response to text (thoughts, predictions etc)
d. Comprehension Q’s - making inferences about character feelings
e. SPAG - apostrophes - indicate plural and singular possession
f. SPAG - using subordinating conjunctions
2 - character
a. SPAG - expanded noun phrases
b. create and describe character
c. SPAG - direct speech
d. explore how authors use characterisation
e. use language to write a characterisation
3 - settings
A. SPAG - fronted adverbials - how and where adverbials
B. SPAG - range of sentence openers (building on previous lesson)
C. create and describe setting
D. explore how author uses atmosphere
E. use language to create atmosphere
F. SPAG - paragraphs
4 - WRITING
a. planning
b - d. WRITE OVER 3 DAYS
e. edit and improve writing
The slides are created using either ActivInspir software or Microsoft Powerpoint. However, if you have any issues over the slides, I can alternatively save them as PDF or JPEG files which can still be used as a series of slides (please just leave a review and ask and I can make any adjustments)
