John Constable was one of the earliest European artists who painted landscape in open air in England; he beccame during his life famous in England and in France. He frequently did his painting art on paper, in oil paint. His definite and larger oil-paintings Constable painted later in his studio in London - after his oil sketches. He created his landscape art in the beginning of the Romanticism area in England.

Constable wrote in many letters about his traveling through the English country, searching for good landscape locations for his motives, to paint. He described also his self-invented new techniques and his dedicated attitude to painting, surrounded by Nature and the country-land.
