Lesson 29

This lesson introduces constellations as the 88 officially defined regions of the celestial sphere rather than simply recognisable star patterns. Learners distinguish constellations from asterisms, explore how the IAU standardised the sky, compare Northern, Southern and zodiacal groupings, and identify circumpolar and seasonal constellations visible from the UK, with specific reference to Milton Keynes. Teaching moves from prior knowledge and visual recognition to direct explanation, comparison tables, sketching, discussion and retrieval practice. Emphasise the common misconceptions that the Plough is a constellation and that the Sun passes through only 12 zodiac constellations; clarify that the Plough is an asterism within Ursa Major and that the ecliptic crosses 13 constellations, including Ophiuchus. Assess understanding through questioning, the pattern-versus-region drawing activity, the plenary quiz and the follow-up observation plan. Prepare clear star charts or projected sky maps, constellation cards and writing frames as needed; no telescope is required.
