A hyperbole is an extreme exaggeration. It is a way of writing that makes something sound bigger, smaller, better, worse, etc than it actually is. Hyperbole is a type of figurative language. It is a figure of speech and a literary device.

This document contains examples of hyperboles. The hyperbole example list can be used to help to understand this literary device, to identify hyperboles within texts and to use hyperboles in writing.
