The resource introduces the concept of planning settlements to avoid an unnecessary impact on a population following on from a hazardous event.

It brings together the concepts of:

  • Group work
  • Risk assessment
  • Preparation
  • Adaptation
  • Mitigation

It also revisits sustainability as a concept allowing incorporation into city design and building adaptations. The students are given specific roles which are assigned based on ability to allow effective differentiation. The students roles are displayed on the PowerPoint in advance of the task starting. Students write down the adaptations etc on the A3 handout ready to present back to the class.
