This is a non-fiction reading lesson and was made to be used alongside reading Wonder by RJ Palacio. However, it could also be used in PHSE/Social Skills/Tutor Time etc and any other non-fiction topic within English lessons as it does not make explicit reference to the text. Suitable for more able KS2 and KS3. It aims to develop close reading skills alongside understanding of and empathy towards facial deformities. It incorporates reading strategies and questioning styles based on Doug Lemov's 'Reading Reconsidered.' It uses an online article from The Daily Telegraph, which I have included a link to on the PPT - when I use it, I edit the article to suit the reading ability of my class. I have also used it to teach 'British Values' - acceptance, manners, kindness etc.
