Free printable note-taking templates for eight methods: Cornell, outline, charting (matrix), mapping, sentence, boxing, flow notes and sketchnotes, plus an abbreviations sheet and a guided notes template for teachers.

What’s included (11 pages, PDF):

  1. Note-Taking Methods at a Glance: all eight methods on one page, with what each looks like, when to use it and what to watch out for
  2. Outline Notes Template: indented levels for main points, details and examples, with a review strip
  3. Charting (Matrix) Notes Template: a blank comparison grid
  4. Mapping Notes Template: a center topic and branch space on a dot grid
  5. Sentence Method Template: numbered lines, one idea each
  6. Boxing Method Template: six labeled boxes plus a summary line
  7. Flow Notes Page: a dot-grid page with a column for questions and links
  8. Sketchnote Page: a title banner and a small key for icons and arrows
  9. Note-Taking Abbreviations and Symbols: common shortcuts for fast lectures, with space for your own
  10. Guided Notes Template (for instructors): a skeleton handout with blanks for students to complete in class

A Cornell notes template is in the companion study skills pack. Each sheet is also included as a separate file.

How to use it: Hand out the at-a-glance sheet first, let students try two or three methods over a week, then keep the one that fits the subject. Charting suits comparisons, mapping suits connected ideas, and outline suits well-structured lectures. The guided notes template helps students who struggle to keep up, including students with ADHD or processing difficulties.
