Factors and Multiples, Modular Arithmetic, Investigation
Key Stage: 4 ★

What day of the week will it be in 702 days time? Can you work out what numbers of days from now will be Wednesdays?

This problem gives an insight into modular arithmetic without worrying too much about notation, by looking at the concept of remainders. It gives students the opportunity to share ideas, listen to each other justify their assertions, and come up with convincing arguments and proofs using simple algebra.

This resource has comprehensive teachers' notes and resources, linked from the problem page. This includes possible approaches and key questions, as well as possible support and extensions.

This is a brilliant investigation which uses division, remainders and algebraic proof, it is also a lovely introduction to modular arithmetic. It would really engage students as it is an interesting investigation, the teachers notes are very detailed explaining how you might introduce this and run it as a lesson. I would possibly use this as an end of term lesson or a problem solving lesson when studying numbers or algebra. Thank you for sharing.
