Probability, simulation, random events
Key Stage: 2 ★★

Kaia's father wears a random tie to work each day. How often does he wear the same tie to work twice in a week?

This problem allows children to simulate a probability experiment; to be involved, creative, and construct their own meanings and explanations for their results. The problem fits a wide variety of skill and age groups because the various aspects can be stretched to the children's level of understanding. The problem also capitalises on the intuitive ideas children have about probability, and develops their understanding of generating random events.

This resource has comprehensive teachers' notes and resources, linked from the problem page. This includes possible approaches and key questions, as well as possible support and extensions.

Great idea for puzzle and problem solving. Encourages logical and systematic thinking as well as a great opportunity for discussion.
