Can you answer the three build-up questions on divisibility before tackling the final challenge?

This problem involves a significant 'final challenge' which can either be tackled on its own or after working on a set of related 'building blocks' designed to lead students to helpful insights. At one level it provides self-checking practice of the algorithms for column addition and short division. At its heart it is about challenging and developing students' understanding of place value.

This resource has comprehensive teachers' notes and resources, linked from the problem page. This includes possible approaches and key questions, as well as possible support and extensions.

This is a great investigation which you could use when studying number or at the start of a unit on expressions and proof. The teachers notes on the webpage are very detailed and explain how you could run the investigation with a class. This activity is differentiated by outcome, some students will be able to explain the pattern whereas some may be able to prove it using algebra. Thank you for sharing.
