Addition, Solving Number Problems
Key Stage: 2 ★★

Can you place the numbers 1-5 into the V shape so that the two arms add up to the same number. How many solutions can you find?

This problem gives opportunities for children to make conjectures, prove these conjectures and make generalisations. They will be practising addition and subtraction, and applying their knowledge of odd/even numbers.

This resource has comprehensive teachers' notes and resources, linked from the problem page. This includes possible approaches and key questions, as well as possible support and extensions.

Brilliant activity that is suitable for all abilities, with simple addition activities leading to more sophisticated higher level thinking. There are teacher's notes, hints and the solution is provided. There are even YouTube clips to show you how to use and extend the activity.
