3D Shapes
Key Stage: 3 and 4 ★★★

Can you use the interactivity to arrange 27 cubes, three each of nine colours, into a large cube such that each colour appears once on each face?

This is an engaging problem that challenges students to work in 3 dimensions and to use different representations of the cube. It can be used to encourage students to persevere, collaborate, work systematically and reason logically.

This resource has comprehensive teachers' notes and resources, linked from the problem page. This includes possible approaches and key questions, as well as possible support and extensions.

My Algebra II classes really enjoyed this activity! In fact only 2 out of 55 students have been successful but the others are still enthusiastically engaged whenever they have spare class time.
