This KS2 science lesson introduces pupils to the three main types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Suitable for ages 7–11, the lesson supports National Curriculum objectives by developing observation skills and scientific vocabulary. Pupils learn how each rock type is formed and practise classifying samples by their properties.

Lesson overview:
★ Starter: Pupils examine mystery rock samples and describe similarities and differences to spark curiosity.
★ Main: Teacher input explains how igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks are formed, supported by diagrams and simple demonstrations. Pupils investigate real rock samples, recording observations and classifying them into families.
★ Plenary: “Rock Detective” quiz consolidates learning, with pupils identifying rock types from descriptions and reflecting on which they would like to study further.
