Viewpoint Writing Overview

This unit was designed for Year 9 students as an introduction to viewpoint writing, including opinion pieces, reviews, persuasive texts, and balanced arguments. It was originally taught in a Christian school, so some examples or references may need adjusting for your context, but the overall structure and text‑feature slides will hopefully still be useful.

The students who used this unit came from a wide range of schools and have had very different levels of prior instruction in these writing styles, so the materials are built to be flexible and accessible for mixed experience levels.

After these lessons we moved onto other non-fiction text types such as non-chronological reports, and the final writing piece was creating their own mixed-text-type magazine (I’ll include these last slides, which are a bit disconnected to the rest but hopefully gives an idea of how the unit ended)
