Year 6 Conversation Practice Programme – 10-Session Autism / SEND Intervention

A complete 10-session conversation and perspective-taking programme designed for structured practice with a Year 6 pupil and carefully selected peer.

The programme uses a clear ASK → LISTEN → RESPOND → ASK A RELATED QUESTION conversation loop, helping pupils develop reciprocal conversation skills without requiring eye contact or teaching scripted neurotypical behaviour. Perspective-taking is taught carefully through possibilities — “What might they be thinking or feeling?” — rather than expecting pupils to guess one “correct” emotion.

Across the 10 sessions, pupils practise asking useful questions, finding conversation hooks, making relevant comments, asking follow-up questions, keeping conversations balanced, considering different perspectives and repairing conversations when communication breaks down.

The 20-page pack includes clear TA instructions, visual conversation supports, topic and information cards, perspective-taking scenarios, conversation-repair activities, useful language prompts and a progress-monitoring tool for baseline, mid-point and final assessment.

Ideal for EHCP provision, autism support, social communication intervention, Speech and Language targets, SEND and 1:1 or paired work. The approach uses peer-mediated practice, modelling, rehearsal, visual support and gradual fading of adult prompts.
