Excelling with Excel - Intermediate Tutorial and Activities

The “Excelling with Excel” Intermediate Activities let students continue their learning with Microsoft Excel to include more intermediate commands. This lesson assumes student already have beginner skills with Microsoft Excel including knowing these basic commands: entering and editing information, basic cell and text formatting, changing column width, creating a basic formula (SUM, AVERAGE, basic math), adding a row or column, changing page settings, printing, and creating a basic chart/graph. If students have not yet mastered these skills, you may want to start with Excelling with Excel – Beginner Activities, available at: https://www.tes.com/us/teacher-lessons/excelling-at-microsoft-excel-beginner-tutorial-lessons-and-activities-11634208 Each lesson has a short, step-by-step tutorial that includes screenshots to walk students through the new tools they will use in the lesson. Then, they are given a creative task to solve, using those skills to create a spreadsheet. There are four lessons, each taking no more than two class periods. These lessons were created for middle school students (grades 6-8) but could also be used with upper elementary and high school students. Evaluating Web Sites - WebQuest Application and Infographic Project

In this lesson, students learn more about how to critically view and judge the validity and trustworthiness of a web site. Included with the lesson is a Webquest to learn about some of the criteria to evaluate on a web site with questions that require reading and critical thinking skills as they learn what to look for in a reliable site. Then, students use the knowledge they have gained to create an Infographic using Canva (www.canva.com – a free, online graphic program) that outlines what others need to look for in a reliable web site. These project are great to print and display in the classroom or hallway! Great for the beginning of the school year to get student research off on the right foot, this lesson is suitable for technology classes, English Language Arts classes, or any class that will use the Internet as a source for research information. This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary grades or high school as well. This lesson gives students an introduction to the basics of applying for their first job. This is perfect for a technology, business or social skills class, or a class that focuses on careers. Students learn about the opportunities that may be available to them for their first job and then learn how to apply for the job. They learn about completing a job application, creating a resume in Microsoft Word, and the basics of interviewing with an employer. Students work with a team to create their own answers for commonly asked interview questions and to practice interviewing skills.
