The Jew of Malta film: guiding questions

This list of questions is intended for students studying Christopher Marlowe’s play “The Jew of Malta”. The questions can be given to students before or after watching the Grandfather Films production of the play, with the understanding either way that they make notes throughout their viewing of the film. The questions include topics such as possible cuts that could be made, the chronology of the film, and the casting. The questions could therefore be used by students of English, Drama, or Film Studies. There are three copies of the questions per page, for ease of printing, photocopying and distribution.

Bellamira PPT - The Jew of Malta (Christopher Marlowe)

Bellamira PPT - The Jew of Malta (Christopher Marlowe)

This PPT is designed to introduce students to the character of Bellamira in Marlowe’s play The Jew of Malta, starting with an image suggesting a modern prostitute as a stimulus for discussion. (Possible questions for students could be who they think this represents in the play - if you have asked them to read ahead - or what character traits or jobs are suggested by the image.) The focus then shifts to scenes 1 and 2 of Act 3 of the play. Again these could be read together in class, or something you have asked students to read alone before the lesson takes place. Student ideas are invited as to whether the scenes are comic or tragic. These could be elicited in any way you wish. The final slides invite students to direct one of the scenes from either a comic or tragic perspective, considering lighting etc. As such this lesson is suitable for English or Drama. It was initially designed for KS5 but could easily be used for KS4 as well.

Subject specific vocabulary - Frantic Assembly and Physical Theatre

Subject specific vocabulary - Frantic Assembly and Physical Theatre

We use this resource both in classroom displays to aid discussion but also for homework and to assist students when writing about or researching practitioners. Key terms are in colour-coded columns with progressively complex terms, ideas or language. We ask students to use a certain number of terms in their written work or discussion and they have to tick which terms they have used as they speak or write to ensure they have made appropriate use of subject specific vocabulary. It’s a good resource for paired discussion or comparative marking. It’s been a great resource for students to help in homework, discussion and for projects like presentations and extended writing. We adapt it as we go, deleting some columns to differentiate for students lower down the school or adding and changing words as needed.

Roman Drama Roles- Whole Class Set

A class set of drama roles for acting out different scenarios. You could warm-up by playing Upstairs/Downstairs or use it at the end of a topic to show the day in the life of a Roman. I used these as a drama activity and took the children outside where they walked, talked and ate like their Roman. They even chose names!

Audience and Intention KS4 Drama scheme and resources

Audience and Intention KS4 Drama scheme and resources

This detailed scheme of work is for KS4 Drama students starting their GCSE course - it aims that students will have an appreciation of the different purposes and intentions that theatre can be used for, and some experience of how they can go about achieving those intentions. It is a great scheme to start developing their devising skills. Students will be introduced to didactic theatre and how messages can be misread in order to identify effective ways in which to engage an audience. They will understand that the course requires that more than one type of audience be considered in both the study of a script and in the preparation and devising of drama. The primary focus will be on documentary theatre and will use the Titanic as a stimulus for a devised piece in this style shaping it to meet their intention and have the required impact on their audience. I have included a Titanic research booklet that my pupils completed prior to working on these lessons. There is also a home and class learning booklet for pupils to use as they work on this unit. The lessons are detailed with learning objectives, challenges and planning for progress aims. Powerpoints and resources are included.

Full 30 minute playscript of 'Pippa the Pirate Fights Plastic'

Full 30 minute playscript of 'Pippa the Pirate Fights Plastic'

This is a 30 minute play based on a pirate who becomes famous for fighting plastic pollution. I wrote and produced this play with lower and upper key stage 2 children, who managed the lines and stage directions well. I have adapted the play with current themes and there’s a host of characters who explain how plastic effects their lives in terms which can be understood from foundation stage. There are other themes including friendship and ‘being kind’ as well as a catchy recycle song. I give permission for character genders to be changed to suit your cast.

Y11 short SOW for Hamlet.

Y11 short SOW for Hamlet.

This is a resource I created for a y11 class studying Hamlet as pre-reading for next year’s Literature unit on Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead. It’s quite open-ended and the activities can easily be differentiated by task and by outcome. The Learning Outcomes are quite broad. This is especially useful if you’re exploring the text and adapting to the class as you go along, as opposed to a specific exam focus. The students picked their own monologue extracts so the ones listed are just suggestions based on my class.
