The first assessment focuses on the reasons why William was able to win the Battle of Hastings. The second focuses on the key consequences of the Norman invasion. This focuses on the aftermath of Hastings and the changes to England under the rule of William the Conqueror. This lesson focuses on the different interpretations of William the Conqueror, both from the Anglo-Saxon point of view and also the Norman point of view. Students will then build up to answer the question as to whether or not William did the right thing with the Harrying of the North. Students will then write an obituary of William based on their points of view about William.

1066 and the Contenders to the throne

Lesson covering the three contenders to the throne in 1066, particularly Harald Hardrada, Harold Godwinson and William, Duke of Normandy for year 7. Activities discussing what makes a good king and how did the three contenders fit into what makes a good King. Powerpoint giving overview of the lesson. Attached resources: Higher ability worksheet asking students to split information about each contender into what would make them a good king and how strong was their claim to the English throne in 1066. E.G. Harald Hardrada was a good King because he was well known for being strict but fair with his subjects and had experience ruling a kingdom. However, his claim to the throne was weak as his claim came mainly from a secret deal between Scandinavian royalty. Lower ability worksheet containing fill in the gaps activity and key words. Fill in the gaps activity in the style of PEE paragraphs. e.g. I believe the witan should choose Harold Godwinson because he was born in England and had grown up in the English court. This meant that he knew the English well and knew how they were used to the country being run. Will need: Information sheets about each contender.
