I am a head of English who has been teaching for 9 years in middle school and Primary. For the last 5 years, I have also been a year 5 and year 3 class teacher. I have been a TES contributor for a while, with free and premium resources and I always upload resources that I have used successfully in my own teaching. I hope you might find them useful too!

KS2 English: Identifying and using adverbial phrases to build descriptive detail

(0)
This PowerPoint includes definitions and examples of the different types of adverbial phrases, as well as Grammar and writing activities to consolidate children's understanding and encourage them to use adverbial phrases to build and up-level detail in their description. The activities have been split into two sessions - 1) understanding and identifying adverbial phrases and 2) using the different types of adverbial phrases to build sentences and to up-level description - but they can be used for an extended lesson. Each writing activity includes answers or modelled examples to use. I used these resources with an HA group in year 5 who were writing a setting description of a factory during the Industrial Revolution, but they could be used for writing and up- levelling any narrative description and for any KS2 or lower KS3 group.

KS2 Key features of instructions: text analysis activity for HA and MA.

These are resources for a group carousel activity for analysing and comparing a range of instructional texts. Each group focuses on a particular key feature as they move around the room to study and evaluate a range of examples and they can then present their findings to the class. The PowerPoint includes task cards for each group that explain their 'expert area' to focus on and these have been tailored and colour- coded to suit different reading ability groups from 1- 5 (5 being the most able). Areas include: text layout, use of images, clarity of instructions, use of verbs and descriptive detail. The PowerPoint also includes recording sheets for groups to use. They will need to complete their coloured sections as they discuss each text. At the end of the activity, when all sections are filled in, this will give a complete analysis of each instructional text that groups can refer to (in their books or on the working wall). The resources can be used with any sets of instructional texts: over the years, I have used these to study instructions for Viking longboat models and recipes for Bengali food with MA and HA ability pupils in Year 5.

This WWII- related unit is based around a scenario in which a V.C medal has been stolen from the Imperial War Museum. Pupils become detectives in order to investigate the case (studying suspect photos, analysing evidence pictures and interviewing staff in role) and write newspaper articles about their suspicions.

This PowerPoint contains game boards for Connect 4. Each round - narrative (Peter Pan), Creation myths and Classical poetry (The Highwayman) contains similes, metaphors, alliteration and personification for pupils to identify and cover with the cards as they attempt to make lines of four before their opposing team. I have used the games on the whiteboard, with children moving the cards across and also as board games with laminated cards for starters and guided reading activities.

Year 5 Literacy: Non- chronological reports

This unit of work and PowerPoint of resources were used during our topic of 'Living Together'. After taking on the role of explorers and learning about different animals (as well as practising their use of simple, compound and complex sentences), pupils will write two non- chronological reports: the first is about the dangerous species of teachers, who prey on poor, defenceless pupils and the second (the main written outcome of the unit) is about the species of year 5 pupils.

Text detectives: AF question cards for guided reading

This is a set of KS2 Literacy AF reading question cards that I have in laminated packs on each of my year 5 tables for pupils to use in Guided reading sessions. They can be used by a TA as prompts to support their questioning of children as they read a shared text, but I often ask the children to use a selected card to ask each other questions.

This is a ppt I have built up over a few years with resources for teaching year 5 pupils about the poem The Highwayman. It includes slides with questions and key tasks, activities sheets to explore character, and question cards that can can be discussed in groups. It also includes a Connect 4 game where pupils have to identify the poetic techniques in the poem. The main written outcome from the unit is for pupils to write an account of the events in the poem in role. If you would like visual resources to support this, there are two very good YouTube clips online.

This powerpoint contains all the resources needed to make a game of Poetry Connect 4. The first grid is a game mat with examples of poetic devices, similies, metaphors, personification and alliteration, and the second is the cards. We play in 4s (2 vs. 2), with pupils trying to cover 4 squares in a row by identifying the technique used. I have used this resource in years 5, 6 and 7, and it really helps pupils to remember the techniques!

I have reloaded this ppt after a few people found difficulties opening it. I hope this is better! I have built up this PowerPoint while teaching Myths, Legends and Fables to year 5. It includes slides of information and stories, worksheets (like the heart rate graph and the cartoon storyboard), and cards that can be cut out for games and activities. I hope others might find it helpful too! Christianne:)
