I had look at the new curriculum with regards to the phonics that children have to be taught in year 1. From what I can see, it looks like the new curriculum year 1 sounds come mostly from phase 3 and 5 (or the equivalent set 2 and 3 of RML). We decided to use the RML flashcards and rhymes to teach the sounds, so this is a breakdown of what sounds are taught when, sticking to the order in which RML is taught. It goes hand in hand with the flashcards from RML with all the lovely rhymes. I have written down all the sounds for year 1 from the new curriculum but put them in the RML order and added spelling patterns. For 2015/2016.

This is a resource I made for my SEN / LA groups when adding amounts. It only consists of 1p coins being added and moves on to 1p and 2p mixed.

Lesson 1: Features of a report. Show children a report on the board. Talk about its features eg headings, subheadings, paragraphs and their jobs. Then give children a cut up report and ask them to put it back together and label the features. Challenge is answering questions about it. Eg What do I find in the third paragraph? (see notebook) Lesson 2: Vocabulary used in a report. Show children the report from yesterday. Go through what adjectives, connectives and openers are and ask children to investigate the report for VCOP. Record on sheet in mixed ability partners. Then write down one opener, adjective etc and make sentences about nocturnal animals orally.

A very quick worksheet on a powerpoint that printed in A3 will allow children to map the 32 participating countries - there is a key at the bottom with numbers so children can colour in the country and instead of writing its long name, just number it. powerpoint can be used as lesson starter as all countries are listed again there (with their flags) and a political world map is attached for explaining how to map. A differentiated sheet I made for my year 2 class. Children add amounts using their number facts eg counting in 2s, 5s, 10s and counting in multiple of tens. I have also taught my class that if they know 2+3=5 then they know multiples of ten 20+30=50. There are a lot of opportunities to apply this on the sheets.

These little cards were made for reception, year 1 and for some children in year 2, who are learning the RML phonics sets 1-3. They can take the big cards home to revise and use them in school to highlight the sounds they know already. When they have completed a set or all sets, they can be awarded the phonics card (certificate) in assembly. Set 1 phonics are called the fish sounds Set 2 phonics are called the seal sounds Set 3 phonics are called the whale sounds (Food chain, getting bigger - that way the children don't know if their animal means that they are on track or behind...) Use the map in the powerpoint for children to find the castles pictured in the word document. They then use the map they have to mark on their own blank map where the castles are.

Use this to introduce motte and bailey castles and get the children to discuss where the best loction would be to build one.

Four easy steps, nicely illustrated. I made this to help my year 2 children to choose suitable books. They use it all the time now, especially when we go to the mobile library and choose books to take home. Also nice to display in the book corner. Enjoy.

This is a resource I made for my year 4 students. There is a below year group/SEN/EAL sheet attached as well as two sets of differentiated questions. The text is printable from the powerpoint.

Great ice-breaker for the first day of teaching to get to know the children, help them to get to know each other and most importantly, help them get to know the teacher! It contains picture clues for ESL children. Children ask around in class and find someone who likes something that is pictured. If they find someone they put his/her name down on the grid. First one to have 4 in a row wins.

This is a little comprehension I made for my year 4 when we discussed time travel and whether it was possible. It is not very long and not differentiated but they got a lot out of it and really enjoyed it. Plus there are a couple of follow up sheets attached for their science following the comprehension.

Originally designed for lower primary (Year 1-3), this resource is a great way to get children to think about what they want to do in the holidays. They have 9 sentence starters eg On a rainy day I want to… On a hot day I want to … To keep learning I want to… and they have to make their own bucket list for the holidays. It could be adapted for higher year groups. Also a little pattern puzzle activity whereby each child gets to design a tile and it can be put together as a class piece of art work.

This comprehension is all about Valentine's Day. It is not differentiated this time but three pages long with 13 questions which could be answered in mixed ability partners. It is NOT based on an information text but rather on three text message exchanges of which there are mobile phone screenshots on there. 1) One between mummy and child wishing Happy Valentine's and saying I love you and the child thanking mummy for all she does. The questions are some retrieval and some higher order thinking questions. 2) One exchange between two best friends, one of them saying she feels lonely and depressed for not having a Valentine. The other friend cheers her up saying it's about having loving people and they swear by 'best friends forever'. We again have some retrieval question and some higher level thinking questions. There i also one about the convention of putting 'xxx' at the end of messages. 3. A message exchange between husband and wife wishing each other happy Valentine's. Husband says he has a surprise, the wife should have a vase at the ready and not eat too much during the day so she is hungry tonight. Children have to use inference to work out what the surprise is and there is a language based question as well. So the whole comprehension covers a lot of skill, hence it is thought for mixed ability pairs - recommended for KS2. Comprehension included as PDF and Word, plus pictures of the text message exchanges.

Maths sheet on bar charts: Children read the table of who was in the final in the past and what their results were and make a bar chart of how many goals were scored in each final throughout the years and answer some questions about it. Differentiated - one is more scaffolded and the bar chart has been prepared, the other needs children to label their own bar chart. 6 sheets - counting in 1s, 2s, 5s always with chart labelled and without. There is also another sheet where children choose 5 countries and represent in a bar chart how many times each country has participated in the final.

Maths activity on finding all possibilities: Differentiated three ways. Children have the task of designing a new football kit for their favourite country and have to choose three (four) colours. They then find all possible ways of putting a new kit consisting of either shorts and t-shirt or shorts, t-shirt (and socks) tgether for their chosen colours. usong colouring. This could be used for research (individually or whole class) when making posters/leaflets etc or as introduction for the comprehension. A 4 pages long comprehension based on the fact sheet. This is an activity based on the flags of the participating countries in the EURO 2016 in France. There is one sheet with all the names of the countries and their flags which is followed by 4 activity sheets: Comparing two flags. Children choose two flags, draw them and compare them - what is the same and what is different. Sorting the flags into symmetrical and non-symmetrical flags. Here are 6 differentiated worksheets (2 pages each) that I made for my class to relate maths learning to the UEFA Euro 24 in France. On each sheet, the letters of the alphabet are printed at the top and each letter has a value. Then there are pictures of important players and children then have to work out the total of the names of the footballers. There are three sheets designed for applying mental strategies to work out name scores: -WALT add using mental strategies: Adding single-digit numbers using basic number bonds. WALT add using mental strategies: Adding several multiples of 10. WALT add using mental strategies: Adding several multiples of 100.
