FOR THE LOVE OF LITERATURE

Average Rating4.40
(based on 966 reviews)

I love creating resources and spend far too much time doing it. Currently teaching mostly A-level English Literature, but there are a range of free and paid resources for all ages. I believe in challenging students with a range of ambitious material, but also believe that this needs to be underpinned by explicit direction on HOW students can develop their ideas in written form. Write better... think better... think better...write better... and so on.

An Inspector Calls essay plans

(10)
Two structured essay plans on 'An Inspector Calls' - could be cut up and offered to the students to organise and/or add quotations to... Then there's a third essay question scaffold for them to fill in themselves. Again, could be adapted and used in lots of creative ways.
Pride and Prejudice 'Lonely Hearts' activity

Pride and Prejudice 'Lonely Hearts' activity

An oldie but goodie - powerpoint talks students through what lonely hearts are, with examples, then provides instructions on how to write their own. Provides some amusing results and I really push mine to write in the style of character and try to apply some of Austen's irony.

Act 3 The Crucible guided reading questions

(1)
Simple powerpoint with questions and thinking points for act 3 of The Crucible. Good for first reading in class and discussion - could be used as a starting point for a more extended piece of writing or a debate/discussion for speaking and listening.

Intro to Frankenstein

Powerpoint contains some contextual overview and objectives, geared to OCR AS spec, prose for exam... but could be adapted to suit other specs. Explains the pre-reading activity and includes discussion of ways of reading. Extracts for students to apply their knowledge to. Can be done if they've read the novel but would work equally well as a pre-reading activity.

Fun lesson on Kennings

(7)
Lesson (fully explained in powerpoint) on Anglo Saxon poetry more generally (linked into Beowulf), with a focus on kennings. Homework activity uses modern kennings poem as a model and lets them have a go at writing their own. I used with year 7 but could be extended to year 8. Lots of fun!

Printable Worksheets for Macbeth: Teaching Tools

(1)
Printable handouts for Macbeth: decision tree and conversation analysis. First on is a checklist of conversation techniques (eg turn taking/ adjacency pairs), which you can use to analyse the Lady M and Macbeth scenes pre the murder of Duncan. Gets them thinking about the language of power, as well as the nature of spoken language. Resource two is a decision tree for students to fill in, exploring all the possibities and consequences facing Macbeth at the end of Act 1.

Comparing poetry : 'Pike' and 'Trout'

(1)
Copies of the poems, 'pike' by Ted Hughes and 'trout' by Seamus Heaney and a few charts/venns that allow them to compare these two. The powerpoint has pics of a pike - can be used a starter. Once we studied these, they wrote an essay, then a poem describing an animal of their own.

Fahrenheit 451 Scheme of Work

(3)
Unusual, yes, but I taught this in year 13 as a part of 'satire' texts in time module. Goes well with 1984 - book is interesint and scarily now, so students find loads to think about.

Moment of truth - target setting

(10)
The teacher document explains how the students should go about this... Developed from a marketing/branding ideas, it gets students (I used it at beginning of GCSE/Y10, although could be used at other significant points!), to consider worries/fears/set targets etc. I used this for the first time this year, and have revisited throughout the year - good results. Let me know what you think.

Wuthering Heights SOW

(16)
A scheme of work designed for the OCR AS spec- although 'Wuthering Heights' is off as an exam text from sept 2011, the scheme itself could be adapted for other stuff. There are also resources here that could help!

Keeping track of my improvement sheets

(1)
Two documents - easily adaptable - which allow students to keep track of their improvement, and allow you to assess their oral tasks too. Great for parents' eve and to see whether students actually read anything you write on their work!

The World's Wife Comparison Chart Worksheets

(1)
Comparison chart to (best blown up to A3) to compare any two poems from 'The World's Wife&'. Includes aspects to focus on... works really well. Could be easily adapted to compare with other prose/poetry texts too.
'Much Ado About Nothing' Gender Essay

'Much Ado About Nothing' Gender Essay

(3)
All these resources build to writing an essay: 'How are Beatrice, Benedick, Claudio and Hero presented to the audience in ‘Much Ado About Nothing’, up to Act 2, Scene 1?'. We looked at Elizabethan expectations of gender first, and how characters conform/rebel..then onto analysis. The powerpoint is an activity to get them thinking about individual word choice/close analysis (can print off and turn into a worksheet). The other stuff is to do with planning essay/ gathering ideas etc. There&'s also a scaffolded essay here for weaker students.

'An Inspector Calls': act by act objectives

(5)
I created a learning objectives sheet/ key vocab and stretch/challenge targets for each act of 'An Inspector Calls'. Good sheets to give students at the beginning of each act- you can return to these as much as you like throughout study...simple...but work well!
