Head of Psychology and Assistant Head of Sixth Form at a large secondary school in South Yorkshire, teaching both GCSE and A Level Psychology to Y9-Y13. I aim to produce high quality resources that are easy to pick up and deliver but also provide a variety of activities to optimise pupil engagement whilst ensuring regular assessment tasks to ensure rapid progress.

A 30 mark assessment covering the divisions of the nervous system, neurons, synaptic transmission and James-Lange theory of emotion given as a mid topic assessment. Questions are in the style of those reflected in the specimen paper and includes multiple choice, labelling diagrams, 4 and 6 mark application questions and a 9 mark essay. Mark scheme included.

Introductory lessons in the development unit developing student knowledge of early brain development. Students are engaged through wholly student led tasks developing their knowledge of key terms, key brain areas and the influence of nature vs nurture. Experience teaching these lessons (2x50 minutes) highlighted the fact that it is meant to challenge the most able through the use of extended reading and newspaper articles but can be easily differentiated down with weaker students only completing some of the nature/nurture tasks. The thinking and discussion questions can be used as plenary/starter to assess progress between lesson 1 and 2.

May also be useful for lower ability KS5 Psychology students! Lesson covering the fight or flight content of the new specification. It builds on previous knowledge of the nervous system to cover further detail of the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches in relation to fight or flight. Lesson includes engaging starter, quick whiteboard recap of the divisions of the nervous system and five active learning tasks including gap fills, reading and highlighting, sorting, represnting information in diagram form and exam style questions with markschemes for self and peer assessment. The lesson is designed to allow students to transition easily from one task to the next allowing students to work at a pace appropriate to them. ‘Check it’ and ‘Helpsheet’ slides are included that can be printed to allow students to sucessfully self assess each task before they move on.

TWO LESSONS! I taught this as lesson 1 and 2 of the language scheme of work. It gives students a good insight into the difference between communication and language as well as the functions of animal communication and how that differs to human communication. Activities include a practical starter, carousel activity, whiteboard plenaries, drawing venn diagrams and reference to exam style questions through a differentiated plenary.
