A short (one A4 page) step-by-step 'how to' of completing question one in an ABRSM grade 8 theory examination paper. Includes a 'prior knowledge' list with a brief summary of figured bass rules.
An advanced, extensive card sort for names of orchestral instruments in four languages (English, Italian, German and French) and their common abbreviations used in scores.
Instructions:
- Print all pages
- Cut out (or have students cut out) all of the instrument names on pages 1-4
- Provide students with pages 5-8, ask them to categorise each instrument.
- Either provide a time constraint to see how much they can do or set more than one team* against each other.
*Best completed either in groups or one-student-per-section, otherwise potentially too lengthy a task to hold students' attention.
This resource is also an easy way to assemble a personalised list of unknown terminology for students to work on memorising (from those cards which are 'left over' after completing the exercise). Great for use near the start of an A-level course or for advanced theory students (e.g. ABRSM grade 8).
A mock question modelled on the style of ABRSM grade 8 theory exam papers. Includes relevant score excerpt, a 25-mark question and answers. Students should be able to complete within half an hour.
Also appropriate for use with higher-ability A-level students.
Worksheets, with research tasks and word-searches, covering all of the terminology required for ABRSM theory examinations from grade 1 to 5.
7 worksheets in total. Separate answer sheets also included.
Resources to support learning and revision for grade 8 theory (ABRSM) . Includes 'how to' guides for each question in the exam, three practise score-reading questions, worksheets on advanced harmony (chromatic chords) and false harmonics, and a card-sort to aid memorising of instrument names.
Paired with past papers and model answers available from the exam board, these are all the resources I use to prepare students for ABRSM grade 8 theory.
Resources to support learning and revision for grade 5 theory (ABRSM) . Includes guides on several major topics (naming intervals, transposition and C clefs) and 7 worksheets for terminology learning.
Simple, short ukulele piece with notation, tab, chord symbols and chord diagrams. Works well with any sized group of beginner ukulele players for their first Christmas performance. See also my 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town' upload.
Simple, short ukulele piece with notation, tab, chord symbols and chord diagrams. Works well with any sized group of beginner ukulele players for their first Christmas performance.
Simple arrangement of the folk song 'Greensleeves' for two voices. Suitable for two-part choir or solo voices of any type (top part reaches F but could easily be transposed).
Short ukulele piece with notation, tab, chord symbols and chord diagrams. Works well with any sized group of ukulele players.
Slightly longer and more difficult than my other uploads, but appropriate for a group that has already learned a more simple piece and therefore understands the concepts of tab (or notation) and chord diagrams.
Worksheet that sets out a performance task based on 'in C' by Terry Riley. Supports learning about 20th century art music, minimalism and aleatoric music.
This is essentially a very simplified version of 'in C', with easier-to-play motifs that are all two bars long. There are 6 'loops' to be performed, though the last two are bracketed as optional (and are more difficult). Full instructions are written on the sheet.
Though the music is written out in notation, there are also written-in note-names and beat numbers, making it quite achievable, with modelling, for students with no experience of notation.
I have used this successfully with year 9 and with an extracurricular group (a small mixed age/ability school band), but it could be used across KS3 and 4. Depending on what background work and extension tasks are added, this may be the basis of anything from one to three lessons, perhaps more.
