Writing a balanced argument- Presentations and worksheets.

(23)
Two presentations supporting children to write balanced arguments. These presentations contain modelling and examples for the children to debate out loud or on whiteboards. There are three differentiated worksheets that give examples children can write balanced arguments about. The examples are chosen with points that children might be interested in, There is also an extension, where children must turn an unbalanced argument into a balanced one. Hope this helps. Alexander Graham Bell- PPT and activity. Perfect for science week!

(4)
A clear and concise power point presentation on the life of Alexander Graham Bell and how he invented the telephone. I also had the children form a telephone line across the classroom. The children stood in a line holding hands. One child at one end called out "hello", and then the children did a mexican wave to the other end of the room. The second to last child repeated the message to the last child. For my main activity, children made paper cup telephones, and decorated them with photos of different telephones, images of Alexander Graham Bell, and important facts and quotes about him. A really good lesson. This was very enjoyable to teach, and the children all learnt something by the end. I hope you enjoy, and please remember to rate and review underneath!

Pokemon morning tasks!

This Powerpoint consists of 10 morning activites all based around pokemon. There are 5 maths based activities covering different topics and 5 english activities that need different skills to complete. The presentation is completely editable, so can be adjusted to fit the skills of your class if necessary. Some of these would work as good time fillers as well if you had twenty minutes to spare or wanted to look at a skill in depth. My class really enjoyed them. I have tried to make it so they can all be enjoyed, whether the children play pokemon or not.

Grams and kilograms- Challenge lesson. Presentation and worksheet

(3)
This is a good lesson to finish off when you have been looking at measuring weight using grams and kilograms, and converting between the two. The lesson begins by telling children they are packing a suitcase to go on holiday to Dublin. They must not exceed 16kg worth of luggage. The presentation also tells them some suggested weights for objects (every item of clothing weighs 100g, every pair of shoes wears 500g etc) Children must plan out their suitcase, adding and multiplyng the weights together and subtracting constantly from the total. They are constantly having to convert between grams and kilograms for their equations. To finish, children must estimate the weight of some other objects they would like to pack in their suitcase. The lesson begins and ends with some word problems similar to the context and relating to weight and fractions. I found them really useful because they meant they were having to practice skills that they had not been taught that day. Please review and rate the resource underneath if you find it useful, and check out some of my other themed and in context lesson ideas! Have fun teaching!

Beowulf- Original poem, quotes, translation and summary- 4 lesssons in total.

(2)
Last year I was asked to teach a unit of narrative poetry on Beowulf. Only the original translation in olde english is in a poem format, so I had to go through the texts and choose suitable quotes and extracts, so that my class could see the original writing, get a feel for the language, and follow on with the story at the same time. There are 4 powerpoints in total. The first is summaries of the main characters in the story, with suitable quotes that describe their appearance and personalities. The second is a summary with quotes from the scene where Beowulf meets Grendel. Next is the scene where Grendels mother seeks her revenge. Finally is the end of the play, with Beowulfs fight with the dragon Hopefully this saves somebody else some time. Good luck, and don't forget to review and rate underneath.

A second set of morning/ early bird tasks based around the pokemon shows and games. This set is pitched slightly lower, so would be brilliant for a lower KS1 class. Although many of them can be used in KS1 and upper KS2. These cover a variety of topics in both maths and english

This simple template can be used across the curriculum to help with instruction writing. It includes and equipment box, a space for the title, lines for writing the instructions, and boxes that can be filled with step by step images. I have used this in both Ks1 and KS2. Modernising the witches spell- Macbeth by Shakespeare

(1)
This presentation walks you through the steps to modernising the witches spell in Macbeth. It begins with sharing the original poem, which is good for group reading. You can then brainstorm different ideas for how a poem could be changed to suit the modern day, I have begun to edit the poem with suggestions, you need to work with the class to model more changes you could make. Finally, there are some normal reminders for expectations in writing to follow. Thanks for viewing. Please remember to rate and review resources underneath!

Bus stop division- celebrity birthday party.

(2)
Hi everyone! I was struggling to find a lesson with a practical context on division for my year 5 class. so I designed this one. The story is, you are working for a party planner who is holding a celebrity birthday party with a list guests. There is information on the celebrities and their food needs, which changes the questions they must do. Children have to share the party food out between the celebrities, taking into acount dietry and other needs. There is an extension at the end as well My class loved this, and were so involved with the story they barely noticed they were using their maths skills. Very good evidence for using maths in outside contexts.

Dissolving science experiment- There has been a murder!

(1)
Children act as CSI investigators and have to solve the murder of a goldfish. They are introduced to suspects and then must investiagte and prove which of the suspects would carry a bag of a dissolvable liquid. There is also slides supporting children to make predictions, and how to lay out a table and record data accurately. The murderer is revealed to be the owner of the local fish and chip shop, who carries salt with him everywhere. Really good fun science lesson, and a good experiment to get children thinking about behaving scientifically Please rate and review the resource underneath!

If the World were a village- Introduction to percentages.

(0)
Hi everybody! This is a resource I created to start a unit of work on percentages based on the book "If the World were a village". You do not neeed to have a copy of the book, as there extracts included in the presentation. The lesson begins by introducing what percentages are, and supports children to work out a few examples. there are 100 squares and word problems to support the different types of learner. Children then have to then create a 100 square which represents the percentages of people around the world. This is followed by some other percentages, which children really enjoyed. It is good cross curricular work, as it teaches children a bit about societies around the world, and how our lives differ. The lesson ends with a column multiplication challenge, where children have to work out how many real people are represented by different percentages.

Planning a holiday to Dublin- Maths resources for a cross curricular investigation

(0)
This is the work from a two week investigation I set the pupils in maths. They had to use all the skills they had learnt over the year (reading tables, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, ratios, decimal places etc) For the first few days, children used ipads to look up flights and hotels and then calculate the total cost of their travel. For the other days, children had to plan their activities and their expenses. For one day they have to plan a visit to a theme park, including converting their money into euros. Children also have to use different menus and price lists to plan out their days and their spending money. The children in my class loved this work and really got involved. I got a lot of evidence for learning in another context as the children had to apply their maths skills without modelling to complete all the different challenges. Feel free to pick and choose the activities as you wish. This is a really good time filler if you have a week at the end of term, or could even be used as assessment.

Square and cube art gallery lesson- outstanding lesson!

(0)
My year 5 class really struggled to understand square and cube numbers and they cracked it using these resources. You need to have multi link cubes for them to build cube statues, and square stickers for cube numbers. Begin by discussing the first photo and seeing what mathematical facts they can draw out of it. (Angles, shapes, lengths, sizes, patterns etc) Then let them into the context, demonstrate building each of the statues and paintings using the equipment as they go along. Give each child a copy of the booklet and have them work through it. |It differentiates itself because children work through it at their own pace and stretch themselves as appropriate. This was an observed lesson, and it was noted to be an example of outstanding teaching! For my plenary I had them draw concentric squares demonstrating square numbers.

E-safety. Protect your password worksheet.

(0)
This worksheet suggests some examples of passwords that children might use, and then allows them to change them so they are safer. I would save a master in a shared file, and then ask children to open the file and save it as their own document. Children then fill in different password combinations, before checking the safety of their own online. Or it can be printed out and filled in by hand. Hamlet by William Shakespeare- read and identify the historical context on a text.

Start by explaining that Shakespeare is a lot easier than children realise, and by telling them they are going to be finding out about a ghost story. Read out the extract for the starter, and give each child a slip of paper with the lines on. Take children to an open space and have them march around like guards, calling out the lines when they meet each other. Add a few children in netball bibs who are the ghosts, and guards must speak the new line to them. Then the PPT walks through the first scene, translating sections of the text with a summary and an image. Children really repond to this part of the lesson. I have also included an abridged script which you can use in the lesson. You could have children write a modernised narrative or playscript, or translate parts of the text, or create a mind map of different ideas of how it would be different. I have taught this lesson a few times, and everytime I have had great results, even from my most less able children. They love the horror element and being able to boast and say that Shakespeare is easy, and that they are experts at reading Shakespeare! Please remember to rate and review this resource!

This is a really useful worksheet, where children must read Roman numerals in context, and translate them. The sentences support children, because they can see immediately if their number fits the context. Could be used for revision of numerals, or to support those who are less able. Hope you enjoy! These three differentiated worksheets are really useful to start off the teaching of fractions with different denominators. It exposes children to different representations and ways of recording fractions in a series of creative and practical activities. It is really good to just let children explore how 2/6ths can be displayed and what makes a true fraction. Red is the simplest Yellow middle Green is most challenging.
