Unit: Dynamics & Statics
Lesson: 7

This lesson is specifically linked to the OCR Physics A Specification, but should apply to most A Level Physics courses.

The lesson covers the following points:

  1. Definition of centre of mass (CoM)
  2. Definition of centre of gravity (CoG)
  3. Difference between CoM and CoG
  4. Examples of when CoM and CoG do not coincide
  5. Finding the CoM for a symmetrical object
  6. Experimental determination CoM for a thin uniform sheet
  7. Problems

There are detailed teacher notes in the ‘Notes’ section of each slide, including answers where required.

My first unit of lessons (Physical Quantities & Units) is available free of charge for you to see the style I employ.

This resource does not delve beyond the shallow surface of centre of mass and centre of gravity. There are no numerical examples (worked or otherwise). There are 14 slides in total, 3 of which are 'notes' for the teacher, another of which is a title slide, and a final slide which is a summary. This is by no means worth the £5 being charged.<br />
