This ready‑to‑use guided reading unit supports students to confidently read Library Magic by Melinda Szymanik, a CHAPTERS novel available free from the Ministry of Education website.
The unit includes 10 structured lessons, one for each chapter of the book. Each lesson is designed for approximately 20–40 minutes and follows a consistent routine to support comprehension, decoding, and reader confidence.
Designed for Year 3–6 learners, this resource aligns with the Science of Reading and explicitly focuses on segmenting as the key decoding strategy. Oral language, vocabulary, and comprehension are embedded naturally within authentic reading experiences.

How the lessons work:
Each lesson follows the same clear, student‑friendly structure:
Review what happened in the previous chapter
Practise segmenting key vocabulary
Engage in a short pre‑reading discussion
Read the chapter (teacher‑led, paired, or independent)
Discuss comprehension questions
Reflect briefly on strategy use
The predictable routine reduces cognitive load and helps students focus on reading with confidence.
