Addition, Patterns, Algebra
Key Stage: 2 ★★

What do you notice about the sums of the diagonal numbers in each of these squares? Can you explain what you notice?

This problem demonstrates the power of the 100 square in helping pupils to recognise number properties and in beginning to reason carefully. The latter, at this level, can be considered as a form of proof. It also gives an opportunity for some to use an intuitive form of algebra.

This resource has comprehensive teachers' notes and resources, linked from the problem page. This includes possible approaches and key questions, as well as possible support and extensions.
