Fractions, Adding and Subtracting Fractions
Key Stage: 3 ★★★

How can you write a fraction with a large numerator as a sum of unit fractions? Will the greedy algorithm always achieve this?

These three problems together offer students an opportunity to engage with some mathematical ideas in depth and not just with the rather mechanical process of adding and subtracting fractions.
This problem in particular requires students to compare fractions and may deepen their understanding of their relative sizes.

This resource has comprehensive teachers' notes and resources, linked from the problem page. This includes possible approaches and key questions, as well as possible support and extensions.

As ever, the Nrich resources are well thought out. This one looks at a simple rule for writing fractions as a sum of unit fractions. Could easily be turned into a whole lesson or just used as part of a lesson on fractions.
