‘How many times would you need to fold a piece of paper in half, so that its thickness would reach the moon?’ (Not my idea!). An investigation involving measuring, converting between units of measurement, estimating, powers, doubling and problem solving. Low threshold / high ceiling task. A fantastic functional skills resource that I would probably use as a project towards the end of term. A very interesting idea that is sure to engage pupils and make them keen to work towards the solution. This task is particularly good because it is accessible on a very simplistic level to lower ability pupils but can be extended all the way up to the top end of GCSE with integers, powers and roots.

I remember reading about this idea when I was training and I've always meant to use it in a lesson. Perhaps now i'll actually do it! Thanks a lot for sharing.
