What’s included?
This download includes x1 A4, landscape pdf sheet, with ‘square’ shaped (paper/card) 2D shape beads.
What’s it for?
This activity helps learners get to know 2D shapes and create a repeating pattern.
First, they’ll choose which 2D shapes and colours to use. As they build the pattern, they’ll need to work out which shape and colour comes next.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children and pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support.
Resource Details
Beads
- 54 square-shaped beads in total
Shapes
- The shapes and their corresponding colours are:
- Semicircles (pink)
- Circles (red)
- Triangles (orange)
- Diamonds (yellow)
- Squares (green)
- Rectangles (turquoise)
- Stars (blue)
- Pentagons (purple)
- Hexagons (maroon)
- The beads are laid out in six rows and nine columns in rainbow order to help learners create a repeating pattern.
Preparation and Assembly
- Dotted guidelines are printed on the beads to show where to cut and punch a hole.
- The recommended hole punch size is 4mm, but a smaller one can be used to make it more challenging and further develop fine motor skills.
- Once completed, the beads will hang from one corner.
- Learners will need to provide their own string, ribbon, or pipe cleaner to thread the beads.
This activity is designed to be completed independently and will help learners improve their fine motor skills and develop an understanding of 2D shapes and repeating patterns.
Differentiation
Here is a clearer explanation of how to adapt the activity for different learning levels.
-
For more confident learners: Encourage them to create their own more complex patterns. They should choose their own 2D shapes and colours to create a repeating pattern of up to nine different shapes or colours.
-
For learners who need more support: Limit the number of shapes and colours provided, begin with two. Encourage learners to create a simple alternating pattern (e.g., shape A, shape B). Once they have successfully completed this, introduce more shapes/colours to increase the challenge.
Suggestions
For a more durable finish, we recommend printing the beads onto card.
The square shape of the beads makes them easy to prepare. For the most efficient method, follow these steps:
- Cut the sheet into long strips, each containing a single row of nine shapes.
- Punch the holes along each of these strips.
- Cut along the dotted lines to separate the individual beads.
