Stage 1 teaches children the foundations of sentence writing: subject and verb.

Children learn that a sentence needs someone or something, the subject, and something happening, the verb. This simple structure is practised repeatedly so children can become confident before adding more detail in later stages.

Each activity follows the same clear routine:

• Write it
• Review it
• Improve it

Children use a picture prompt to rehearse a sentence orally, write it, check their work and then improve it. The consistent format helps children focus on their writing without having to learn a new activity each day.

The baseline and final progress checks make it easy to see where children started, identify progress and decide when they are ready to move on to Stage 2.

The cards are optional. Everything needed to complete the Stage 1 workbook is included in this resource.

Stage 1 is the starting point of the Every Day Sentence Builder programme. Further stages gradually introduce new sentence elements, helping children develop increasingly detailed sentences one step at a time.
