Story maps are templates we can use to record the main elements of a story, or a life event.
Story maps help children:

  • understand a story
  • retell a story
  • learn about the typical structure of a story.
You can use story maps with individual children or in small groups. You can use story maps to support children with many types of text, including fiction, plays, and personal narratives.
Story maps are easy to use. Simply print out the template and support children to fill in the main elements of the story – by writing or drawing, or a combination of both.
