An engaging lesson for Remembrance Day, or Veteran's Day. Thirteen page comic book style text to introduce the history of trench warfare during World War 1. Great resource for use with teens. It outlines why and how the trenches were constructed and what life was like for the soldiers who used them during such horrific battles as the Somme and Passchendaele. It also includes some unusual facts about trench life and a page of memorable quotes from characters who lived through the war. Contains a quiz and other useful resources, and can be printed out in black and white, used as a slide show on a computer, or as a PDF e.book on a tablet. 35 pages Contents; 1. A thirteen page PDF color version of the comic with a comprehension quiz at the end. This can be printed out or displayed as a slideshow on a computer or used as an e.book on a tablet. 2. The same thirteen page PDF comic in black and white for easy printing. 3. An ePub version for teacher's use on a tablet. 4. A student print that has a section for dictionary work and an exercise for practicing some of the more difficult words in the comic. 5. A student answer print for the comic quiz and dictionary tasks. 6. Two writing prompts to extend the lesson. The first is a creative exercise to write a news report from the front line of any historical battle. The second is an essay question to use memorable quotes from World War 1 to illustrate the student's thoughts and feelings about war. 7. A teacher's notes print that provides directions on using the comic and useful links to sites about World War 1 and trench warfare. All prints are in PDF format. These materials have been designed to provide a brief introduction to Gothic horror and are also great for Halloween! I have provided a variety of multi media resources including two short animated videos and a ‘Prezi’ (like a Powerpoint but more fun!) along with associated quizzes and texts as a PDF resource which can be tailored to the needs of the students. There are two versions in this package. One for older students, and one for students of ESL or younger students The materials can be printed out and used in a multi media classroom, and the Prezi can be downloaded and installed on a computer for ease of use. Alternatively, copies of the PDF, which contains links to all online materials, can be purchased for students to install on their own computers so they can access everything directly. 16 pages The lesson contains; Version 1: Ages 14-16 1. PDF student and teacher documents that give an outline of the history of Gothic horror stories and the elements that are recognized as important to the genre. 2. A link on the PDF worksheet to view online or download the Prezi which contains 9 slides that describe the elements of a Gothic story visually with humorous speech bubbles and full narration. 3. Links to two animated videos and learning materials for new vocabulary, listening and reading comprehension quizzes along with a comic writing exercise. 4. A set of teachers notes and quiz answers along with a contact e.mail for enquiries. Version 2: Younger students or those studying ESL 1. The same PDF student and teacher resources. However, these have simplified language and vocabulary and have been changed from book form to discrete lesson parts that can be distributed as handouts in any order. These have the same links to the movies and 'Prezi'. 2. There are also a wider range of review materials for this version, including a crossword, reading review, word quizzes, comic book text fill and a reading and word test based on the language learned.
