UPDATED AND IMPROVED ON 03/10/2021 This resource is for KS1 teachers teaching dance through the Physical Education part of the national curriculum during the topic of rainforests (or any topic connected to rainforests, Brazil, carnival or celebration). This ‘Rainforest Animals/Carnival’ SOL allows pupils to discover Brazil in a fun, exciting and an imaginative way. During the first 3 lessons of this scheme of learning, pupils will learn about the animals that live in the Amazon Rainforest, which they will use as a stimulus for choreography. The following 3 lessons focuses on carnival, where pupils will be able to take part in their own carnival parade. At the end of this scheme of learning, pupils will have a performance piece that they can perform in an assembly or for parents. This SOL comes with: 6 lesson plans, detailing the activities in each lesson along with coaching points to aid teaching. A 6 lesson PowerPoint including notes under each slide to help with the delivery of the lesson. A document with the pictures of each of the rainforest animals to be explored. These can be printed and laminated to hand out to groups so that they know which animal they have been assigned to. A CPD document that should help with aspects of teaching dance that a none dance specialist might find helpful. Notes: The timings of the lesson and the activities within the lesson plans can of course be adapted. Activities can be changed, lengthened, shortened, taken out, differentiated etc. Feel free to adapt this resource to suit your own needs as well as the needs of the children. This SOL comes with: 6 lesson plans, detailing the activities in each lesson along with coaching points to aid teaching. A 6 lesson PowerPoint including notes under each slide to help with the delivery of the lesson. A document with the pictures of each of the sea creatures to be explored. This year 9 GCSE Dance Taster: Choreography 12 lesson delivery PowerPoint has been created for teachers of Dance preparing their Year 9 pupils for GCSE. During lessons 1-6, pupils will explore a variety of different stimuli used in choreography e.g. 2D art and text. Pupils will learn how to create and develop motifs based on a stimulus, structure their choreographies and experimenting with choreographic devices. During lessons 7-12, pupils will choose from a list of stimuli (based on the actual GCSE component 1 exam paper), take part in research tasks and choreograph their own group choreography. At the end of the SOW, pupils will be assessed using the GCSE choreography mark sheet. Each lesson comes with starters (bell activities) and lesson objectives. The SOW also includes: Homework 1 – Choreography exam style questions (based on section A of the written dance exam paper) Homework 2 – Programme note with examples. Choreography help sheet (I advise printing this out back to back and laminating for each group) Research task (theory lesson). Please note, the video included in the PowerPoint is from Eaqa. Updated: 11/08/22 This ‘Gumboot Dance’ 6 lesson SOL is for teachers teaching KS3 dance. This SOL explores the history and evolution of South African Gumboot dance. Pupils will gain and develop basic dance appreciation skills through watching clips of Gumboot dancing and '“Gumboots” Through the eyes of Michael Moloi which will lead into discussions about the history of the style in relation to actions, space, dynamics and relationships. Props are introduced from lesson 4 and inspiration on how to use them is drawn from Stomp the Musical. Pupils will gain and develop basic performance and choreography skills through working as a whole class to perform set Gumboot rhythms using unison, repetition and action and reaction. Working in small groups, pupils are encouraged to be creative and are allocated time to experiment and improvise choreographic ideas with their groups resulting in a group performance of their Gumboot choreographies that include a prop. Pupils will have the opportunity to view each other’s work and provide feedback to improve their own and other’s work. This SOL also provides pupils with research homework tasks to promote independence and research skills needed at KS4. Updated: 11/08/22 This street dance resource is for teachers of KS3 dance (preferably in the third term of Y7 after teaching ‘intro to dance’ and ‘Rock and Roll’ . This lively and upbeat SOL has been created to really engage pupils within their dance studies. As this SOL is taught in term 3 after ‘intro to dance’ and ‘Rock and Roll’ pupils are expected to use the performance, choreography and appreciation skills that they have previously learnt and apply them to a different style of dance. This SOL encourages pupils to explore the shapes that their body can make through experimentation, improvisation and games; building up their confidence before stretching and challenging pupils to choreograph movement using the letters in their name as a stimulus. This ‘Intro to Dance’ 6 lesson SOL and delivery PowerPoint is for teachers teaching dance at the beginning of Year 7 (or whenever dance is first introduced in your school). Purpose: This SOL is to be taught right at the beginning of Year 7. Lesson 1 is designed to inform pupils of the dance studio rules and what to expect from their secondary school dance lessons. Throughout this SOL, pupils will gain and develop basic performance skills through working as a whole class to perform a teacher taught phrase that consists of the different dance body action. Working in small groups, students will gain and develop basic choreography skills through the creation of their own phrase using the knowledge gained through the performance task and will have the opportunity to view each other’s work and provide feedback to improve their own and other’s work. Throughout this SOL there is an emphasis on safety in the dance studio where pupils will develop knowledge and understanding of basic health and safety requirements for dance. This year 9 GCSE Dance Taster: Anthology 14 lesson delivery PowerPoint has been created for teachers of Dance preparing their Year 9 pupils for GCSE. Within this SOW pupils will explore key motifs within each of the 6 GCSE dance anthology professional works: A Linha Curva Emancipation of Expressionism Artificial Things Shadows Infra Within Her Eyes I have included a music file within this resource which is a ‘megamix’ of clips from the 6 anthology works. Using the motifs from the anthology, a dance megamix can be choreographed to the music. I used this as a performance piece with my school performance evening. Each lesson comes with starters (bell activities) and lesson objectives. The SOW also includes a written homework task.

Updated: 11/08/22 This ‘Objects as Stimulus’ 6 lesson SOL is for teachers teaching KS3 dance. This ‘Objects as Stimulus’ resource is an alternative resource to my ‘Artificial Things’ resource. The difference between the 2 resources is that ‘objects as Stimulus’ can be taught to pupils at KS3 who will progress to either GCSE or BTEC at KS4. Whereas my previous ‘Artificial Things’ resource was aimed at KS3 pupils who would progress to GCSE only. This SOL has been designed to encourage pupils to use their imagination and apply their creativity at the same time as developing their dance skills. Choreography skills are homed in on in this SOL, as pupils are given an object as a stimulus (the box) and taught how to create motifs that can be later on developed to create a dance that is entertaining to watch. Later on in the SOL, pupils choose their own object as a stimulus to create and develop their own motifs into their own choreographies. Throughout the choreography tasks, dance appreciation is explored through questioning why pupil’s motifs relate to their object stimulus and what actions, space, dynamics and relationships they have used. This KS4 GCSE Dance Component 2: Dance Appreciation Walking Talking Mock is for teachers of AQA GCSE Dance who are preparing their pupils for the actual GCSE written paper. The PowerPoint presentation set over 3 lessons (1 lesson per section) guides pupils though the specimen written paper that can be found on the AQA GCSE website. Each question is broken down so that pupils clearly understand what is being asked of them and know how to gain full marks for each question (using AQA’s specimen mark scheme). Each lesson (each section) comes with its own starter activity (bell task) and lesson objectives. Section B includes talking points to help pupils articulate their ideas before writing their answers down. Section B also comes with some example answers. PLEASE NOTE: the example answers I compiled from different recourses that I found online but not from TES resources. Section C I created myself (Only using AQA’s specimen paper for guidance). I have included the answer booklet for section C within this resource (the specimen paper for sections A and B can be found on AQA’s website). Section C includes planning slides to help pupils plan for the 6 and 12 mark questions. Section C also comes with some example answers. PLEASE NOTE: the example answers I compiled from different recourses that I found online but not from TES resources. Section C includes questions on Emancipation of expressionism, Artificial Things and Shadows so is ideal to be taught midway through Y10 (after teaching Emancipation of Expressionism, Artificial Things and Shadows) following the advice from AQA or at any point onwards as part of the revision process. The creation of the PowerPoint was very time consuming. Feel free to create your own or save a lot of time by downloading mine.

This is a resource for teachers of Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Performing Arts Unit 1: Exploring the Performing Arts choosing to study Kenrick Sandy and Emancipation of Expressionism for one of their practitioners. This resource is intended to be used after delivering my ‘L2 BTEC Performing Arts Unit 1 Introduction to Kenrick Sandy and Emancipation of Expressionism’ scheme of learning. This resource includes 6 x 1-2 hour lessons/practical workshops to guide your BTEC Performing Arts pupils though the information they need to include in their dance research journal once the assignment brief is launched. Each lesson/workshop is complete with bell activities, TIF tasks and homework tasks. All homework tasks link to the dance research journal that pupils need to submit in accordance to the assignment brief. (Please note, the pupils I teach and use this resource with have 2 teachers. I plan and deliver lessons on one dance practitioner – Kenrick Sandy. The other teacher plans and delivers lessons on 2 drama practitioners. This resource covers just what I deliver and therefore only covers 1 practitioner). All YouTube video links used as well as general lesson guidance can be found in the notes section underneath each PowerPoint slide.

This is a resource for teachers of Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Performing Arts Unit 1: Exploring the Performing Arts choosing to study Kenrick Sandy and Emancipation of Expressionism for one of their practitioners. This resource includes 7 1-2 hour workshops (3 practical and 4 theory) That I created in the summer holidays and taught to my Y10s in the 1st half term of the school year. I found that it was a great way to introduce Kenrick and EofE before the assignment brief was officially launched. Each workshop is complete with bell activities and TIF tasks. Links to YouTube clips are provided. Some workshops include homework tasks. I created the 7 workshops with the unit 1 specification in mind, with my knowledge/experience of teaching EofE as part of the GCSE and my new found knowledge after reading the EofE Education pack available on the BoyBlue website. I refer to pages/sections from the education pack in some of the workshops. Please note, some of my activity ideas are not my own and are what has been suggested in the Boy Blue education pack. I do recommend that anyone teaching EofE, purchase the education pack alongside my resource. However, you will be able to teach all of the workshops I have provided even if you have not got a copy of the education pack.

This resource is for teachers of Level 3 BTEC Performing Arts, teaching Unit 12 Unit 12: Contemporary Dance Technique The practitioners that I choose to focus on are: Early pioneers - Isadora Duncan and Rudolf Laban Later developments - Merce Cunningham Jose Limon and Martha Graham Current developments - Akram Khan, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Hofesh Schechter and Stephanie Lake This resource takes around 12x2hour lessons to teach. Alot of the resource has been created using the online specification and YouTube clips which all had active links at the time of publishing this resource. In the event of YouTube clips being taken down, I have added notes under some of the slides with advice. Feel free to use/adapt this resource to suit your own needs. Under the ‘log’ slides it says " Provide pupils with log guidance resource" I have not included this as what I use in class exists as a hard copy only. This resource is for teachers teaching dance at KS3. This SOL was created with my Year 9 class in mind. However can be adapted to suit your own class/year group. My ‘All Around The World’ SOL was created to explore known and lesser known dance styles from around the world. The SOL begins with 5x2 hours worth of workshops exploring different dance styles/countries/continents . Pupils then choose which country/continent/dance style they will represent in the showcase that features at the end of the SOL.
