EYFS September 2021 Statutory Baseline assessment

(1)
When children start school in September 2021, you will have six weeks to complete the NEW baseline. I have made a complete resource so you will be well prepared. This 13 page editable excel is divided by subject and all you need to do is add your pupil names and print out. As a bonus I have included optional resource pages so that you can print them off to save you preparation time needed to gather resources. The guidance suggests that each child’s assessment can be started and stopped but that it should only take twenty minutes. My extensive experience of teaching in the EYFS has taught me that it’s not as straightforward as that. I have always thought that assessment should be slotted into your everyday routines. Your greatest tool is your own ability to spot incidental opportunities. Parts of the baseline will have to be completed on a 1:1 basis but much of it can be completed if you know exactly what you and your support team are looking for; by observing and interacting with the new intake. e.g. Child uses props in the role play or child talks about the things around them. This download will save you hours and is therefore exceptionally good value for money and will help you spot the changes between the old and new assessment in order to be well prepared for September.

Writing -from print to cursive script

You are purchasing the mat for the grey added lines. This is in essence a Ruth Miskin adapted resource. I have added her rhymes as an aid for you to support children move into precursive writing. The images were copied from free online sources but they are from the author above. As we know plain letters are the ones early learners see in print to read and recognise. I move children on from plain to cursive by saying that now we know the letter shape and it’s starting point, lets get to the start by following the grey line - this is usually on the line… I chant “We start our letters on the line” as I model writing each letter. The mat can be laminated for childen to practise during continuous provision.

I can form letters and recognise my name

To create bespoke pupil name cards. As we know children relate to the real world to help understand concepts. In this instant driving a car forwards, reversing and forwards again make instructions clear and relatable. Creating a class set of names will give each child a bespoke road and cars on each letter of their name/ once made they can be laminated and used for daily, weekly writing and/or recognition work. Copy, paste or edit letters to match each child’s name. Shrink a car for each letter and face it in the direction of writing at the starting point. Top tip:- Use plain letter shapes I teach children to recognise a letter to read before writing it. The letter shape matches the font in most early reading books. This helps with early recognition. (I use a strategy to support teaching cursive script at a much later date in the year).

marking stickers

When working with EYFS children often produce reams of independent work, that needs to be acknowledged. My stickers not only praise children for their work it also enables you to sift through a mountain of marking in minutes. It is important to note when a child has produced work on their own or when they have had adult support. Save time by letting your class add their own marking stickers onto their work. Even sticking them on yourself saves you time having to repeat the same comment and ensures every piece of work is given the same clear message. This is editable so that you can change the font and or the text. I used address label sheets 10x4 40 per page. Alternatively printing several sheets and chopping them up ready to stick in with a glue stick is still much quicker than writing on each sheet. Top Tip Edit a sheet to say:- I have worked with an adult to produce this work today. This will ensure that any moderation of ability takes into account that the child had help.

Read Write Inc pupil tracking Set 1. Ten minutes a week to monitor your whole class.

In ten minutes a week you can monitor RWI for your whole class. Simply print of the six full sized sheets/mats (in a colour if prefered) and five copies of the teacher page (page 7). At the start of guided reading give out a mat to a small group of children. Ask a child to read a column or row whilst the rest of the group track and step in to help when invited if needed. On your teacher page write out the names of the pupils and as a child says the word/sound you can tick this off. As the professional you may wish to do repeated checks before signing off certain sounds. I did this with 6 children a day at the start of reading sessions and children got into the routine of looking listening supporting and reading in turn. It literally takes 2 minutes to administer each day. At the end of the week you should have five teacher pages to compare and use to inform your planning, homework and or interventions. This worked for me for many years and as such I could show progress snapshots to any SLT who came looking for whole class or specific pupil information.
