Bring ‘A Christmas Carol’ to Life!

Turn Dickens’ classic novella into an interactive, collaborative classroom activity with this set of ready-to-print plot cards, covering the whole story from beginning to end.

Each card represents a key moment from the novella, and an answer sheet is included so you can quickly check students’ sequences.

But don’t just use them one way - there are loads of possibilities! Here are a few ideas to get you started:

1. Piece the Plot Together

Give students a shuffled set of cards and challenge them to work in pairs to reconstruct the entire plot. Can they remember what happens and what happens next?

1. Stave Challenge

Split the class into small groups and give each group a different stave. Their mission? Work together to put the staves into the correct order and reconstruct Scrooge’s journey.

1. Become the Timeline!

Give every student a card. Without showing anyone else their card, they must talk, question and collaborate to work out where they belong in the story. Once they think they have it, the class must organise themselves into a human timeline!

1. Turn the Plot into Art

Give each student a card and ask them to create an image representing their moment from the novella. Put all the artwork together to create a fantastic visual timeline of ‘A Christmas Carol’. Then, give students an A3 copy to stick into a double-page spread in their books (a brilliant way to capture the whole plot at a glance).

And That’s Just the Beginning…

Use the cards for retrieval practice, starters, revision, sequencing challenges, group competitions, speaking activities, or creative writing prompts. You could even remove a few cards and challenge students to identify the missing moments!
