This introductory Media Studies lesson is designed for GCSE Media Studies and A-level Media Studies students who are beginning their course. It introduces students to the theoretical framework used in Media Studies and gives a clear overview of the four key areas of the subject: media language, media representations, media audiences, and media industries.
The lesson is designed as an accessible introduction. It does not go into heavy theory or complex exam application straight away. Instead, it helps students become familiar with the four key framework areas so they can begin to understand how Media Studies is organised as a subject.
Although this lesson has been designed with the AQA GCSE Media Studies and AQA A-level Media Studies specifications in mind, it can be adapted for a wide range of Media Studies courses and exam boards.
The lesson follows an I do, we do, you do structure. Students are introduced to the key ideas through teacher explanation, then guided tasks, before moving into more independent work. There is also a low-stakes quiz at the beginning of the lesson and an extension activity for students who need additional challenge.
The PowerPoint includes a full teacher script in the notes section, making it suitable for experienced Media Studies teachers, non-specialists, cover lessons, or teachers new to delivering the subject. The lesson is fully editable, so it can be adapted to suit your class, curriculum or department approach.
