What’s included?
x4 sheets, portrait orientation, pdf format.

What’s it for?
This resource is a fun activity that helps learners practise recognising, naming, and counting 2D shapes up to a total of 12.

To complete it accurately, learners need to be careful and systematic as they find and count each shape. The shapes included are:

  • Semi-circles
  • Circles
  • Triangles (equilateral and right-angled)
  • Squares
  • Rectangles
  • Pentagons
  • Hexagons

After counting, learners should record the total number of each shape on the provided sheet. A full-colour answer key is also included, making it easy to check where each shape is hidden.

Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for children in the early years, pupils in years one and two as well as students needing additional learning support.

How to use it?
This activity requires learners to find and count eight different 2D shapes hidden on page 2.

After counting, they should record the total for each shape (up to a maximum of 12) on the recording sheet on page 1. The answers are provided on pages 3 and 4 in the same layout, allowing learners to easily check their own work.

Suggestions…

  • Counting Tips
To make counting easier and more systematic, encourage learners to use a different coloured crayon or felt-tip pen for each type of 2D shape on page 2. They don’t need to colour in the entire shape; simply placing a small dot on each one as they count will help them keep track.

  • Extending the Activity
This task is a great way to introduce data handling. Once learners have counted all the shapes, they can transfer their totals onto a block graph. You can then ask them questions to help them analyse the data, such as:

  • “Which group has the most/least shapes?”
  • “How many shapes have 3 or 4 sides in total?”
  • Checking Work
Provide the answer sheets (pages 3 and 4) for learners to share after they have completed the activity. Encourage your learner/s to be autonomous and mark their own work once complete.
