This download includes three A4, portrait pdf sheets to label seven ‘2D shapes and their properties’ on the Robot’s control panel.

What’s it for?
This resource is to recognise/read and match words/vocabulary to 2D shape images to reinforce/develop further understanding of 2D shapes and their properties.

Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support.

Resource Details
This activity is a hands-on way for learners to explore the properties of x7 2D shapes: a semi-circle, circle, triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon, and hexagon.

To complete the task, each learner will need:

• a pencil
• scissors
• a glue stick

Resource Breakdown

• Page 1: This is the main ‘control panel’ board where learners will glue their labels. It’s a large, clear work area for them to label the properties of each shape. Learners should not cut anything out on this page.

• Page 2: This page contains all the labels needed for the activity. There are x4 different types of labels for each shape:

  • The name of the shape (e.g., ‘square’)
  • The number of sides
  • The number of vertices (corners)
  • Whether the shape has a curved side. A green tick label is included to be placed next to the circle and semi-circle.

All labels have dotted lines to show where to cut.

• Page 3: This page features the same 2D shapes that are on the control panel. Learners can cut these out and hold them. This is especially helpful for those who don’t know the properties of the shapes, as it allows them to physically investigate them by counting the sides and vertices.

Tips for Use
An adult can pre-cut the labels for learners who find using scissors difficult or demotivating.
