‘We’re making soup for dinner’ is a simple, fun and interactive song that exemplifies the richness of diversity through adding a variety of diverse vegetables to the soup pot. It is an action song that encourages the children to explore a wide range of vegetables - some familiar to them, and some that
may be new - from across the world. It allows you to incorporate a range of vegetables (and later foods) that the children may be used to eating at home, thus making the song a fully inclusive experience for all children, whether or not they are native English speakers.

A great song to teach listening skills and healthy eating. It can be used as part of a music session by EYFS/KS1 music specialists, or as part of topic-based learning by generalist teachers, teaching assistants, and other professionals too!

This resource, uploaded in February 2024 features:

  1. The lyric sheet
  2. An mp3 sing-along vocal track,
  3. An mp3 instrumental-only track, (for when you feel confident to sing your own versions of the song)
  4. Black and white printables

It’s suitable for 3-7-year-olds, but could also be used for older primary aged children by using more extensive and varied vegetable resources. Alternatively, you could adapt the ingredients to other food sources or even change the focus entirely, for example: ‘We’re planting seeds today’ etc.

This song is a great conversation starter - it opens up the possibility to talk about how we may eat and enjoy different sorts of vegetables, depending upon our own cultures and customs at home, and how it is always great to have the opportunity to taste and try new things. This is a great healthy eating activity for EYFS children, or as a way to explore where food comes from for KS1 children.

How we use this resource: In order to really effectively share this song, you will need:
a soup ‘pot’ and a selection of vegetables - either toys or colourful pictures (a range of vegetables are provided in our adult song support pack).

Begin by giving each child a small selection of varied vegetables to start with - perhaps just one or two (you can always increase the amount as the children become more familiar with the song). The premise of the song is that the children will need to listen out for the names of the vegetables,
and then add them to the pot when instructed. There are also a number of actions for them to join in with, such as filling the pot with water, chopping the vegetables, adding salt and pepper, and getting very hot from all their cooking.

Start by reading through the lyrics and listening to, and learning, the song yourself, so that you feel confident in sharing it with the children ( - don’t worry about the quality of your own singing voice - all they need to join in, is to see your enthusiasm for singing with them!), then share it with the children.
